Since our distant ancestors gathered around humble fires we have been enamored with stories. They are the compass by which individuals and societies find orientation in a chaotic world. As long as there is consciousness there will be heroes on a journey.
In the past, the role of the master-storyteller fell to writers, philosophers and artists. They created the narratives people enjoyed, retold and tried to imitate. Many of these works became what today is called high culture and many hold perennial truths.
Yet the expanse of culture has been widened by media allowing for immediate interactivity and co-creation on a global scale. All of us have become storytellers.
Social media, multiplayer games, the dawn of the metaverse – virtual communities and realities have become another kind of fireplace around which we gather to spin our tales.
